Popular French press coffee makers recalled due to breakage risk
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of approximately 5.9 million Bodum French press coffee makers due to a potential hazard. The recall affects eight models featuring 8-cup and 12-cup glass carafes.
According to the commission, the glass carafes can unexpectedly shatter during use, particularly if they are already damaged or cracked, potentially causing burn injuries. The use of metal spoons to stir coffee is specifically cited as a contributing factor.
Bodum USA has received 70 reports of carafes breaking, with 48 of those incidents resulting in burns to consumers.
The commission advises consumers to immediately cease using metal spoons or utensils when stirring coffee in the carafes. Bodum will provide a plastic stirring spoon and a warning label to affected customers.
The coffee makers were manufactured in Thailand and Portugal and were sold at retailers such as Walmart, Target, and online through Amazon.com.
Bodum, a kitchenware company established in 1944, is based in Denmark and Switzerland.
