Vivid 1,800-year-old belt buckle unearthed in Ukraine
Archaeologists in Ukraine have discovered a vibrantly colored belt buckle believed to have been used by a nomadic warrior nearly 1,800 years ago, near the Roman Empire’s borders.
The artifact was found by local residents within the Tsetsyn Forest in southeastern Ukraine and subsequently given to Antonii Moisei, a professor at Bukovinian State Medical University. The buckle, approximately 0.8 inches (2.1 centimeters) square, features teal, blue, and yellow enamel decorations.
Moisei states that the buckle’s design and construction techniques indicate it was created between the second and third centuries A.D., a period when this region of Ukraine was part of the Roman province of Dacia.
Rome engaged in the Dacian Wars (A.D. 101-102 and 105-106) under Emperor Trajan, ultimately conquering and annexing Dacia. Trajan commemorated this victory with a column in Rome depicting the conflict.
Along with the buckle, Moisei also collected a decorative belt fitting and three small, round metal pieces, likely belonging to the same belt. He has created a reconstruction illustrating what the belt may have looked like before its loss in the forest.
While the owner remains unknown, Moisei theorizes the belt may have belonged to a Sarmatian warrior, a group of tribes inhabiting the Black Sea region. These warriors sometimes fought against, and at other times alongside, Roman forces as mercenaries.
The belt fragments reflect a Roman provincial craft tradition, potentially acquired through trade or as spoils of war. Moisei is continuing his research to determine the buckle’s origin. The discovery offers further insight into Roman military interactions on the empire’s periphery, and future study may clarify the nature of those relationships with the Dacians.
