Ukraine reports Russia expanding missile range and payload capacity
Ukraine’s military intelligence agency has reported that Russia is enhancing the capabilities of several missile systems, including increasing their range and warhead size. The assessment highlights Russia’s efforts to modernize its arsenal amid ongoing conflict and air defense challenges for Ukraine.
According to the agency, Russia is developing an improved version of the 9M723 “Iskander-M” tactical ballistic missile, extending its potential range from 340 to 440 miles, a significant increase over the previous model. Earlier this year, in August, Ukraine reported Russia’s deployment of an upgraded “Iskander-1000” missile featuring a larger engine and launch system for extended range.
The intelligence also indicates that Russia has increased the warhead size and range of its 3M55 “Oniks” anti-ship missiles to improve their effectiveness against ground targets. Moscow has reportedly produced dozens of these missiles in the last seven months.
Russia maintains substantial stockpiles of missiles, with estimates suggesting up to 700 ballistic missiles and thousands of cruise missiles are available. The country’s defense industry is reportedly capable of producing over 200 missiles monthly, despite international sanctions.
Recent Russian strikes have intensified, particularly targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as winter approaches. Ukrainian officials reported at least 33 deaths in the Zaporizhzhia region on Monday following Russian attacks. Ukraine is facing a shortage of interceptors, prompting repeated requests for increased air defense support from allies.
The agency also noted that technical issues have been identified in some X-101 cruise missiles, requiring repairs, and that production of the X-47M2 “Kinzhal” ballistic missile has been suspended due to accuracy concerns, with resources redirected to other missile programs. Russia’s defense ministry and its US embassy have not yet responded to requests for comment.
