Vehicle crashes through Adelaide supermarket, owner uninjured
A supermarket in Adelaide’s western suburbs experienced a startling incident Sunday afternoon when a car crashed through its wall.
Emergency services responded to the Woodville IGA on Port Road around 1:30 PM.
According to store owner Marc Schirripa, he was inspecting inventory when a vehicle reversed through the building’s exterior. He described the experience as feeling like a powerful wave, knocking him against the shelves. “It felt like a big wave shooting up behind me, hitting me from behind, pushing me up against the shelves,” he stated.
Security camera footage captured the impact in an aisle stocked with snacks and confectionery.
Paramedics assessed Mr. Schirripa at the scene, and he reported being unharmed. The driver, a 31-year-old woman, and her passenger sustained no injuries.
“She was a little bit shook up, and I’m OK,” Mr. Schirripa said. “I’m a very lucky man.”
Mr. Schirripa’s wife and father were present at the store and rushed to the scene after hearing the crash.
Repairs to the building are expected to take several weeks. The supermarket has only been open for one month.
South Australian Police issued a fine to the driver for reversing beyond what was necessary.
