British Columbia’s time shift creates unexpected alignment with Florida
Residents of the Regional District of East Kootenay, encompassing communities such as Cranbrook and Kimberley in British Columbia, are now observing the same time as areas in Florida, including Fort Walton Beach and Crestview.
This unusual alignment stems from British Columbia’s recent decision to forgo the traditional clock change, diverging from the practices of most other regions in Canada and the United States. The province opted to adopt year-round mountain daylight time, or a permanent UTC−6 time standard, following a vote by officials in August.
As a result, a portion of the Florida Panhandle, located over 3,200 kilometers away, now shares the same wintertime zone with parts of British Columbia.
Many British Columbians experienced a Sunday morning where their clocks remained unchanged for the first time in decades. This means most of the province will be one hour ahead of Washington state and two hours behind Ontario and Quebec during the upcoming winter months.
“All of Eastern Canada, for the most part, besides a small portion of Ontario, did turn back their clocks,” noted Darius Mahdavi, CBC’s science and climate specialist. He added that this discrepancy could lead to confusion, with devices potentially displaying incorrect times.
The shift also creates other temporal anomalies. Alaskan communities will find themselves two hours behind British Columbia, while residents of Point Roberts, Washington, a U.S. pene-exclave, will experience a time zone shift when crossing the border into Blaine, Washington.
Most of British Columbia has transitioned to a permanent daylight time standard, known as Pacific time (PT), which operates on a UTC-7 schedule.
The decision to maintain daylight time year-round has drawn criticism from some scientists who argued that adhering to standard time would have been more beneficial for public health.
