Bass predicts chaos in Los Angeles if Raman wins election
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass cautioned on Sunday that a victory for Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) candidate Nithya Raman would lead to widespread disorder, potential police departures, and possible federal intervention ahead of the 2028 Olympics.
Bass issued the warning after casting her ballot at the Anderson Munger Family YMCA in Koreatown, alongside her family. She described a hypothetical four years under Raman’s leadership as “chaos from day one.”
Bass specifically targeted Raman’s pledge to replace LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, arguing that such a move could trigger a mass exodus from the department, which is already facing staffing shortages. “I don’t think she has a clue what it takes to get a police chief for the nation’s second-largest city,” Bass stated.
She further suggested that instability within the LAPD could prompt intervention from Washington, D.C. “I can only imagine Washington looking at that and saying, ‘These people can’t manage it. We need to come in,’” Bass said.
The Los Angeles Police Protective League, the union representing LAPD officers, echoed Bass’s concerns. Sgt. Chris Wecker, LAPPL Vice President, warned that Raman’s policies could transform Los Angeles into “a Petri dish for every crackpot socialist idea.” He criticized her platform, alleging it would result in fewer police officers and the proliferation of homeless encampments.
Bass also criticized Raman’s record on affordable housing, claiming her district ranks near the bottom in the city for housing production. She contrasted this with her own plans to complete 47,000 housing units currently in development.
“I don’t take anything for granted, but I think the undecideds have begun to shift,” Bass said, expressing confidence in her campaign’s momentum.
The California Post reached out to Raman’s campaign for comment but has not received a response.
