Privacy-focused AI assistant Ollie to cease operations
Ollie, a startup specializing in a privacy-respecting AI assistant, announced it will be shutting down operations within a week. Bill Lennon, co-founder and CEO, shared the news on X Friday, confirming the app’s official shutdown date of November 6.
“I’m really proud of what we accomplished,” Lennon stated. “We built an incredible personal assistant with a small team, and learned a ton. I’m grateful to our amazing team, our users, our investors, and everyone who supported us on this journey.”
The rise of text-based AI assistants has been rapid in the last year, fueled by advancements in underlying AI models.
Ollie, which previously announced a $7.5 million seed round led by Khosla Ventures in September, operated on a subscription basis. The assistant aimed to help families manage their schedules and stay connected by integrating with email and calendars. Features included appointment scheduling, meal planning, and bill payment assistance, with future plans for household budgeting.
Notably, Ollie achieved SOC 2 compliance, a privacy standard verified through independent auditing, setting it apart in a market often facing privacy concerns. However, prioritizing user privacy proved challenging for profitability.
According to Lennon, the competitive landscape within the AI industry ultimately contributed to Ollie’s closure. “We got close, but ultimately couldn’t keep up,” he said. “With Muse, Instinct, and others entering the space, it became harder to stand out, grow, and raise the capital we needed to succeed.”
Customers will soon receive information regarding data export and refund processes, Lennon confirmed.
