ChatGPT to consolidate Chat and workspaces starting in December
OpenAI is streamlining its ChatGPT interface by merging the Chat and Work tabs, a change slated to begin in December. The move, announced on OpenAI’s website, aims to simplify navigation and integrate advanced agentic capabilities.
Currently, the ChatGPT desktop application separates functions into ChatGPT and Codex sections, with Chat and Work tabs within the ChatGPT area. The upcoming update will combine these, allowing users to seamlessly transition from brainstorming to task execution. Users with Plus, Pro, and Business subscriptions will see their usage allowance shared across both ChatGPT and Codex.
OpenAI will initially test the integrated experience with a select group of users before a wider rollout. An email sent to users confirmed the change and highlighted the ability to utilize files, plugins, and web interactions within ChatGPT, enabling tasks like website creation and presentation development. Codex will remain a distinct experience within the desktop app.
The transition will pool tokens—the units of information processed by the models—for both ChatGPT and Codex. While most users are unlikely to experience significant disruption, some may occasionally encounter longer wait times for usage resets depending on their model and task complexity. Instant chat will not consume tokens.
This follows a similar move by competitor Anthropic, which combined Claude’s chat and Cowork functions in September. OpenAI anticipates a smooth transition and minimal impact on existing user workflows.
