The incident occurred while the man was fossicking with a group near Laura, in the Cape York Peninsula, approximately 300 kilometers northwest of Cairns.

Emergency services received a call around 8:30 a.m. today reporting that the man had become trapped.

Paramedics responded, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His remains were transported to Cairns via rescue helicopter.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.

The location of the incident was accessible via Endeavour Battlecamp Road, which runs alongside the Laura River.

The area is situated near the Palmer River goldfields, a historically significant site following the discovery of gold in 1873.

Harold Tavner, owner of the Laura General Store, stated that one of the man’s companions contacted him while awaiting emergency assistance. “The fellow that was up there with the unfortunate chap … he was trying to make a helicopter pad for the helicopter to land there and he wanted to know how big an area it would need,” Tavner recounted. He then assisted the helicopter pilot in determining the necessary landing space.
