Jet boat racing roars back in Victoria after 15-year hiatus

A gamble to bring high-octane racing to a rural Victorian town has proven successful, drawing a full house to the Elmore Events Centre. The venue, located 50 kilometers northeast of Bendigo, hosted the first round of the 2026-27 V8 Superboats Championship season on Saturday, marking the sport’s return to Victoria after a roughly 15-year absence following the closure of a track in Melton.

Elmore, a town with a population of 850, debuted as a host on the V8 Superboats Championship circuit. According to Elmore Events Centre executive manager Derek Shotton, the day transformed after the rain cleared, resulting in a packed crowd, competitive racing, and positive feedback.

The addition of jet boat racing is a new venture for the not-for-profit venue, which typically hosts agricultural field days, equestrian events, scouting activities, and tractor pulls. Shotton emphasized the importance of this new event for the venue’s long-term financial stability.

The 1-kilometer track, 3 meters wide and 750mm deep, was constructed less than a year ago. Its design prioritizes driver skill over raw speed, leading to some entertaining mishaps. “There were plenty of mishaps and mis-corners and boats landing on islands, that adds to the excitement,” Shotton commented.

Driver Jade Atchison and navigator Erin Kearney, representing the Disturbed Racing Team from the NSW Central Coast, secured victory in the LS class. Atchison expressed her enjoyment of the track’s technical nature, stating, “It was a bit of a go-kart track which I’ve kind of always preferred.” She also noted the positive impact of Victoria’s return to the national V8 Superboat racing scene.

Shotton believes the event’s success will revitalize the sport. “Finding the right piece of ground where you’re not close to residential areas, and you can do this sort of racing has been a hard try,” he said. “For us to be able to do this puts Victoria back on the national stage.”

Elmore is contracted to host two rounds per season for the next five years. Organizers are already planning improvements, including a third spectator viewing bank. The next event is scheduled for March 13, coinciding with a tractor pull and lawnmower racing competition.
