Asep Safrudin, head of the agency, stated that the suspects are being investigated for unlawful interception of communications, unauthorized access to electronic systems, and data deletion.

The individuals in custody are Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo, currently the President’s Chief of Staff; Insp. Gen. Ahrie Sonta Nasution, head of the National Police Legal Division; and Insp. Gen. Eko Hadi Santoso, a senior instructor at the National Police Education and Training Institute. All are being held at the National Police headquarters detention center.

Safrudin explained that the suspects are accused of illegally monitoring the phone numbers of the president, government officials, political figures, media representatives, community leaders, NGO activists, and businesspeople.

Neither President Prabowo nor the suspects have publicly addressed the allegations. Attempts to reach a spokesperson for the Presidential Chief of Staff’s office were unsuccessful.

Police have questioned 10 witnesses and three expert witnesses, seizing 11 mobile phones, an iPad, and four flash drives as evidence.

The alleged wiretapping occurred between 2025 and 2026, a period during which Listyo held the position of National Police chief. According to Safrudin, the suspects allegedly entered phone numbers into the Lawful Interception Management System (LIMS) without proper verification and subsequently ordered the deletion of intercepted communications from the system to obstruct the investigation.

The motive behind the alleged wiretapping remains under investigation. Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra emphasized the seriousness of the situation, noting that such actions could destabilize a nation.

The suspects face charges under Article 258 of Indonesia’s new Criminal Code, carrying a potential 10-year prison sentence, as well as charges under Article 332 of the Criminal Code (up to six years) and Article 32 of the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (up to eight years).
