The incident began Wednesday at approximately 6:10 a.m. when FBI agents served a warrant in Lemon Grove. Upon announcing their presence, agents were immediately fired upon from the residence. Agents briefly returned fire before taking cover, and no one was injured. A suspect was later apprehended at the scene, and the shooting is currently under investigation.

The two-day operation, involving hundreds of officers and four federal indictments, targeted 42 alleged gang members and associates. Ten search warrants were executed, and authorities are still seeking seven fugitives as of Thursday afternoon.

The focus of the crackdown was Varrio Hidden Hills, a street gang based in Poway with alleged ties to the Mexican Mafia.

John Marquez, 49, is accused of leading an international drug trafficking operation that distributed methamphetamine and fentanyl into California. Court documents indicate he managed distribution routes, set prices, and transferred profits to Mexico.

In one instance, Marquez reportedly discussed sending money to Sinaloa, stating, “I have to count some money and send it to Sinaloa.”

The gang allegedly sold methamphetamine for between $750 and $900 per pound and fentanyl for $12,500 to $13,000 per kilogram.

“These arrests strike at the heart of this violent, sophisticated, Mexican Mafia connected criminal gang,” stated US Attorney Adam Gordon.

The investigation, which commenced in mid-2024, extended across several California cities including San Diego, Chula Vista, Oceanside, Riverside, and Temecula.

The defendants are charged with offenses related to the distribution and conspiracy involving methamphetamine, fentanyl, and cocaine.
