Exotic, poisonous pufferfish found on Dorset coastline
A highly toxic pufferfish has been discovered on a beach in Dorset, England, after being carried far from its natural habitat.
Diver Owen Booty initially mistook the fish for a buoy while walking along Knoll Beach, Studland. Upon closer inspection, he identified the 17-inch-long specimen as a pufferfish.
Despite being deceased, pufferfish remain incredibly dangerous due to the potent toxins they contain, which are reportedly 1,000 times more lethal than cyanide. These toxins persist in their organs and skin.
Pufferfish typically inhabit the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans. Experts believe Storms Austen and Boalo likely pushed this particular fish hundreds of miles off course.
The fish’s name derives from its unique defense mechanism: it inflates into a balloon shape to deter predators. However, this characteristic does not diminish the danger they pose to humans. Contact with the fish’s sharp spines can be fatal if the toxin enters the bloodstream. Additionally, improper preparation and consumption of pufferfish can also lead to poisoning.
“I was out walking along Knoll Beach as the sea was a little too rough to get in the water, when I spotted what initially looked like a buoy or plastic bag washed up on the shore,” Booty stated. “I walked over to investigate and realised it was actually a dead fish. Having encountered pufferfish while diving abroad, I had a good idea what it was, but sent the photographs to Dorset Wildlife Trust and a friend who’s a marine biologist for confirmation.”
A spokesperson for the Dorset Wildlife Trust confirmed the rarity of the sighting, noting that while they occasionally appear in the UK, they are typically found in warmer, open waters. The Trust advises against handling any pufferfish found and encourages reporting of sightings.
The National Trust, which manages Studland Beach, has not yet received a report regarding the fish.
