Samsung enhances Galaxy Watch sleep apnea detection with AI
Samsung is introducing an improved sleep apnea detection feature for its Galaxy Watch devices. The upgrade utilizes a new artificial intelligence algorithm to provide users with more detailed sleep reports than previously available.
The feature categorizes potential sleep apnea cases into three levels: mild, occasional, and frequent, allowing for more precise condition management. This development follows a trend of health tracker companies incorporating sleep apnea detection into their devices.
According to the American Medical Association (AMA), approximately 30 million Americans are affected by sleep apnea, a condition that can lead to serious health complications if left untreated, such as high blood pressure and heart disease. The AMA emphasizes that sleep apnea is highly treatable.
While the Galaxy Watch can identify potential sleep apnea, it does not provide treatment plans. The enhanced feature will initially launch in Korea in November, with availability on the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, Watch 9, and Ring. Future software updates will extend the advanced detection capabilities to the Galaxy Watch 7 and 8.
To utilize the feature, users must record two nights of sleep data within a ten-day timeframe to receive personalized insights regarding their sleep health. A specific release date for the US market has not yet been announced.
