Reserve Bank increases interest rate to 18-year high
The Reserve Bank of Australia has raised interest rates to their highest level in 18 years in an effort to control rising inflation.
The cash rate target has been increased by 0.25 percentage points, bringing it to 4.85 per cent, a rise from the previous rate of 4.60 per cent.
This marks the first time the cash rate has reached this level in Australia since late 2008. It is the fifth interest rate increase implemented by the bank this year.
The decision to raise rates was not made with full agreement among the board members. Six members voted in favor of the 25 basis point increase to 4.85 per cent, while three preferred to maintain the rate at 4.60 per cent.
Homeowners with mortgages are likely to face additional financial strain as a result of the increase. However, those with high-interest savings accounts may see increased returns, depending on whether their financial institutions adjust rates accordingly.
Recent statements from Reserve Bank officials indicated a likely rate increase, citing concerns about rising inflation expectations. The RBA aims for average annual consumer price inflation of around 2.5 per cent.
“There is an increasing share of businesses who are thinking that maybe 3 to 3.5 per cent is the new normal [for inflation],” RBA deputy governor Andrew Hauser cautioned last month. “That is the central banker’s nightmare. We can’t allow expectations to shift away from the target.”
The full economic impact of this rate adjustment will not be fully realized until 2028, as it typically takes between 12 and 18 months for interest rate changes to permeate the economy.
