Falling oil prices spark market rebound, but can the momentum continue?
Lower oil prices and declining Treasury yields are contributing to a resurgence in the stock market, according to CNBC’s Jim Cramer.
Brent crude dropped 7.63% on Monday, settling at $104.77 a barrel. This decline pushed the 10-year Treasury yield to its lowest point since September 10th, benefiting sectors including healthcare, financials, retail, and travel.
“Never forget what this market’s really about: oil, inflation and interest rates,” Cramer stated. He noted that the drop in oil prices led to lower interest rates and a subsequent rise in stock values.
Amazon, which rose 2% on Monday, was highlighted as an example. After initial struggles following last week’s earnings report, the stock rebounded, mirroring its late September performance. Cramer suggested the market initially underestimated the strength of Amazon’s results.
Waste Management also saw gains of 1.8% as investors reassessed the company’s strong quarterly performance, previously dampened by rising interest rates.
Cramer expressed caution about the sustainability of the rally, observing a significant influx of capital into the stock market. “You just have money piling into stocks at the same time,” he said. “They aren’t sustainable.”
With investors shifting funds away from technology, Cramer suggested that companies in other industries are becoming increasingly attractive growth opportunities. He noted that medical device makers like Medtronic (up 3%), GE HealthCare (up 4%), and Intuitive Surgical (up 1%) are emerging as appealing alternatives.
Financial stocks also benefited as concerns about consumer debt repayment eased. Capital One rose 3% after facing challenges last week due to worries about gasoline prices and credit delinquencies.
Consumer companies, including Walmart and Costco, each experienced a roughly 3% increase. Cramer attributed this to consumers having more disposable income due to lower gasoline prices.
Cramer’s Charitable Trust holds shares of Amazon (AMZN), Capital One (COF), and Costco (COST).
